Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

The certificate program includes job-specific instruction and clinical procedures. In this 130-hour program, training and experience is completed in the clinical classroom at OIC and at a local nursing facility. In addition, students participate in Employability Skills Training and receive Job Placement Assistance to fully prepare them for the workplace. Successful graduates will obtain State of Connecticut certification.

Certified Nursing Assistant work is as challenging as it is rewarding. CNA's provide personal care primarily to the elderly in convalescent homes, sharing their skills and talents in important and meaningful ways.

If you want a career in the health care industry, if you enjoy working with the elderly, this is the place to begin. Average starting salaries are $11/hour and most full-time positions offer a complete range of benefits.

Classes are held during the day and the hours vary.

How to become a CNA
  • Stop into OIC and fill out the application form
  • Complete the assessment/evaluation on any Tuesday afternoon, beginning at 1pm
  • Document that you meet OIC/CNA training requirements, including:
    • An employment and reference history
    • 18 years old and in good health
    • A completed health form
    • A high school diploma or G.E.D.
    • Demonstrated reading comprehension and interpersonal communication skills
    • If you have children, you must show that you have two (2) sources of childcare
    • Be able to attend all classes and State required clinical hours, using your own car or public transportation systems

NOTE:
  • Everyone who applies may not be accepted. You must meet all the above eligibility requirements.
  • OIC consistently maintains a waiting list for its CNA classes. It may take as long as 3-6 months to be accepted into this program.
