 Introduction to Culinary ArtsIn this certificate program, students are taught basic food service, which includes food handling, nutrition, sanitation and instruction in the art of cooking, including techniques such as sautéing, baking, and grilling. The students develop competencies for careers in food establishments; successful completion of the program includes receipt of a food handling certificate through the Ledge Light Health District.
Students develop competencies for careers and employment in restaurants as prep cooks, line cooks, and various food service positions. In strengthening their skills, students experience a wide range of hands-on learning opportunities.
Schedule: 12 week program, Monday through Friday, daytime hours.
Customized schedule varies, 16 - 24 hours per week.
Individuals interested in enrolling in one of OIC's training programs are asked to come to our New London offices and complete a two-page application form.
The next step is our Pre-Training Assessment, which is offered every Tuesday at 1pm. This assessment provides OIC information on an individual's basic skills: Reading, Writing, and Math.
Following these two steps, individuals may be contacted by an OIC staff member for an intake interview.
NOTE:
- Everyone who applies may not be accepted. You must meet all eligibility requirements.
- OIC consistently maintains a waiting list for its Culinary Arts classes and it may take as long as six months to be accepted into this program.
